Concussion Recovery in Surrey

woman sitting at desk with a hand on her headA concussion can leave you feeling “off” long after the initial hit, whether it’s headaches, fogginess, dizziness, or trouble concentrating. Back & Body Wellness Centre takes a nervous system-focused approach to help practice members recover fully, not just wait for symptoms to fade.

More Than “Just a Bump on the Head”

A concussion is a disruption to how the brain and nervous system are communicating, not necessarily a structural injury that shows up on a scan. That’s part of why symptoms can persist even after imaging comes back clear, and why recovery isn’t always as simple as rest alone.

Why the Neck Is Often Part of the Picture

The forces involved in a concussion frequently affect the upper neck as well as the brain itself, and irritation here can contribute to or prolong concussion-like symptoms. Common contributing factors to a slower recovery include:

  • Upper neck injury sustained alongside the head impact
  • Disrupted communication between the inner ear, eyes, and brain
  • Returning to normal activity, screens, or exercise too quickly
  • Poor sleep during the recovery window
  • Unaddressed anxiety or stress following the injury
  • A history of previous concussions

How Concussion Symptoms Tend to Show Up

In the first hours and days, headache, dizziness, and fogginess are common, along with sensitivity to light or noise. As time goes on, some people also notice trouble concentrating, irritability, disrupted sleep, or neck stiffness that doesn’t track with how the head itself feels.

Unlike a typical bump or bruise, concussion symptoms can wax and wane and may not fully resolve with rest alone, especially when neck involvement hasn’t been addressed.

A Nervous System-Focused Approach to Recovery

Care starts with a thorough evaluation of the upper neck and nervous system function, since this is frequently overlooked in standard concussion care. From there, we build a personalized plan that may include gentle, specific adjustments and rehabilitation exercises targeting the neck and the brain’s coordination with the eyes and inner ear, always working alongside your medical provider’s guidance.

The goal isn’t to rush you back into activity. It’s to make sure the recovery is complete, not just quiet.

When It’s Time for a Closer Look

Any suspected concussion should be evaluated by a medical provider right away, especially if there’s been loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, worsening headache, or confusion. Once cleared of any emergency concerns, if symptoms are lingering beyond a couple of weeks, or if neck pain and stiffness remain after the head symptoms have improved, it’s worth a closer look.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this safe soon after a head injury?

Any suspected concussion should be evaluated by a medical provider first. Once cleared of emergency concerns, care can be tailored to where you are in the recovery process.

My scans came back normal, but I still don’t feel right. Why?

Concussions typically don’t show up on standard imaging, since the injury affects nervous system function, not structure. That’s part of why symptoms can persist even with a normal scan.

Do you work with my doctor or a concussion specialist?

Yes. We coordinate care with your medical team to support, not replace, the guidance you’re already receiving.
